It was written in 1759 by Voltaire, the prolific Enlightenment philosopher, writer, playwright, and poet, known for his belief in civil liberties. The plot is about Candide, a sheltered youth tutored in optimism, who is painfully disillusioned about life as he witnesses and experiences hardships in the real world. Candide was a controversial book, as Voltaire intended and fully expected. |
